Bill 216: Food Literacy for Students Act

November 22nd, 2020

Food literacy, including experiential or hands-on skills learned in gardens and kitchens, is critical for making healthy food choices that enable self-reliance and improve human health.

A private member’s bill that would introduce food literacy education to every grade level in Ontario schools has passed its first and second readings in the Ontario legislature. Bill 216, the Food Literacy for Students Act, would be the first of its kind in Canada to mandate food education in schools.

The private member’s bill was introduced to the Ontario Legislature by MPP Daryl Kramp on October 19, 2020 but was first brought forward by the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) Food Policy Council in 2017.
