Canadians will pay more for meat and vegetables in 2020

The recently released Canada Food Price Report, a collaboration between Dalhousie University and the University of Guelph, has found that Canadians will pay more for meat and vegetables in 2020. 

The report, now in its tenth year, forecasts a 2 to 4% increase in groceries for Canadian families. In 2019, the average Canadian family spent $12,157 annually on food. In 2020, it is expected that the average annual cost will jump almost $500 to $12,667 annually. The report cites a number of potential factors including single-use plastic reductions and the impact of climate change on our food production. 

The recent Who’s Hungry Report (Read More) found that more Torontonians than ever accessed food banks in 2019, a 4% rise from 2019. The report noted the increase in food prices as one of the main causes of driving more people to emergency food services.
