New Report on Food Security in Toronto during COVID-19

The Toronto Foundation recently released the “ Food Security during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Toronto’s food crisis is imminent” report. (Read more)

Key findings of the report include

  • Toronto CMA (Census metropolitan area) represents 19% of unemployed people across Canada
  • At the end of February 2020, there were 210,000 Toronto residents relying on government support and now there is an additional 1 million more as a result of job loss. 
  • 600,000 more residents will experience significantly reduced income but will not be eligible for any government assistance. 
  • The Daily Bread Food Bank reports a 53% increase to their central warehouse
  • 40% of food banks in Toronto have closed
  • Average daily contact volume to 211 in Toronto has surged by 112% in April compared to February, 211 which experienced 452 calls per day in April with regard to food insecurity versus 212 calls in February.
  • The Stop Community Food Centre served 400 meals in one day compared to previously 200 meals. With its main fundraising events cancelled, The Stop is working hard with limited resources to support its community. 
  • The new Scarborough Food Security Initiative is serving more than 600 families comprising more than 2000 people.
  • Second Harvest surveyed 100 recipient agencies and found more than 70% of those organizations need donations of both fresh and shelf-stable food, as well as cash and sanitation supplies like gloves, masks, and hand-sanitizers in order to remain operational.
  • Seniors and previously food insecure populations are at even greater health risk during this time.
