Foodshare recently hosted their “In the Pit: The Untold Stories of Toronto’s Dishwashers” event to highlight the lives of one of the lowest paying jobs in Toronto’s restaurant industry.
The event described the often precarious, alienating and exhausting nature of working as a dishwasher.
Speakers at the event discussed the impacts of a 15/hr minimum wage, creating restrictions on cancelling shifts last minute, and unions. A basic income was also discussed as a potential option to increase the quality of life for underpaid and overworked employees. It was noted that a universal basic income may take the responsibility off of big corporations to pay their workers a living wage and instead rely on taxpayer dollars to subsidize wages.
If you are interested in learning more there is a photo exhibit runs until November 28th, 2019, at Daniels Spectrum (585 Dundas St E)
