Rising Ocean Temperatures and the Loss of Food and Culture

October 2nd, 2019

“The rapid changes to the ocean and the frozen parts of our planet are forcing people from coastal cities to remote Arctic communities to fundamentally alter their ways of life”  – Ko Barrett, Vice-Chair of the IPCC.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change, has just released the “Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate” to detail the current and potential impacts of climate change on our oceans.

More than 1 billion people globally depend directly on ocean ecosystems. Not only are fish and seafood are an essential source of protein across the globe, but they are also integral to livelihoods and cultural practices and traditions, including right here in Toronto.

During #ClimateAction Week, it is important to recognize the importance of our oceans and the role they play in our climate, but also the food they produce. The impacts of climate change on our oceans will be felt globally, but especially among the most vulnerable.
