Study Finds Canada Child Benefit Reduces Severe Food Insecurity

Recent research by the University of Toronto found that the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) has reduced the rate of severe food insecurity by one-third among low-income families. 

It was found that increasing household income reduces food insecurity but does not eradicate it entirely. The report suggests that to have a stronger impact, the government should direct more money towards low-income families as this would greatly improve the results of reducing food insecurity. There is a direct link between income and food insecurity. 

The most recent Who’s Hungry Report by the Daily Bread Foodbank found that there were over one million visits to food banks in Toronto over the last year, a 4% increase from 2018. The report offers many government recommendations to further alleviate food insecurity (Read more).
