Over the last year, there were over one million visits to Toronto food banks representing a 4% increase since 2018. The Daily Bread Food Bank, in partnership with North York Harvest Food Bank and The Mississauga Food Bank, has released the annual Who’s Hungry report to weigh in Toronto’s food banks and the stories of those who are visiting them. This year, the report focuses on “the Right to Food” along with using big data to capture more nuanced patterns in food bank usage.
“Hunger is a symptom of poverty. It a public policy issue that cannot be outsourced to charity.”
The report also offers policy recommendations that would support the City of Toronto in alleviating poverty and food insecurity. These recommendations include adopting a rights-based approach to decision making.
