The History of Food in Canada Is the History of Colonialism

A recent article by The Walrus details the history of Canada and how it is built on colonialism and the systemic oppression against indigenous communities.

This is a must-read article when it comes to understanding how history has shaped indigenous communities in Canada. It also discusses some of the efforts to try and alleviate some of the challenges these communities face such as food insecurity. For example, the Nutrition North program is run by the Government of Canada. The program offers subsidies to grocery vendors in Northern communities so that they can charge a lower price on products. Given the distance products have to travel, and often by air, grocery items are significantly more expensive than they are in other areas of Canada. Nutrition North has been widely criticized for its ineffectiveness at addressing the root of the problem, the lack of Indigenous food sovereignty.
