Despite Canadian food prices going up in 2020, as predicted by the new Canada Food Price Report, the food we eat costs relatively little compared to all the work that goes into producing, processing, consuming and disposing of food. In addition, the human and environmental health impacts of our food system is a cost that is not often factored into the price we pay upfront.
The International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) recently released a short YouTube video that describes how the low cost of food contributes to unsafe and low paying jobs, environmental degradation and chronic diseases. Watch the short video to see how cheap food perpetuates an unsustainable food system with regard to both human and environmental health.
